Write Autumn in Ink at the Japan Society's Calligraphy Workshop
Calligrapher Yoko Takenami is teaching three beginner sessions of autumn-themed Japanese calligraphy at the Japan Society in London on Saturday 21 November.
Sat 21 Nov, first session 11am

The Japan Society in London is holding three autumn-themed Japanese calligraphy workshops on Saturday 21 November, each lasting an hour and a quarter. They start at 11am, 1pm and 3pm at the Society's building at 13/14 Cornwall Terrace, on the Outer Circle of Regent's Park.
Yoko Takenami is teaching. According to the Japan Society, she began studying calligraphy at seven, qualified as a master of calligraphy in 1990 and now teaches at places including the British Library. She also wrote The Simple Art of Japanese Calligraphy.
Participants learn to write autumn-related words and characters in Japanese with brush and ink, and Takenami introduces different styles of Japanese writing as she goes. The Society says the session pays attention to line and spacing. Everyone leaves with their own piece on a shikishi board.
No experience is needed, and all the tools and materials are provided. The workshop is for ages 14 and over, and 14 and 15 year olds need a parent or guardian with them throughout.
Tickets are £25 each, or £20 for Japan Society members and their guests, and booking is essential because spaces are limited. Cancellations get a full refund if the Society hears by noon on Monday 9 November.
Takenami still goes back to Japan for tuition from her own Teshinkai master, the Society says.
