Project Sifu brings martial arts cinema into a room you can move in. On Thursday 22 October, University College London hosts a free evening with Dr Wayne Wong, Lecturer in East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield and lead of the project.

The programme runs from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in Room G15, Chandler House, 2 Wakefield Street, London WC1N 1PF. You watch Project Sifu 2 (Wayne Wong, 2026, 42 minutes), talk with Wong about martial arts cinema, embodied spectatorship and practice-based research, then join a short participatory workshop. No previous martial arts experience is required. The workshop uses simple movement exercises so ideas from the screen turn into something you try with your body.

Project Sifu started in Sheffield as a youth programme that pairs martial arts training with filmmaking. It has since shown work at UNESCO's International Centre of Martial Arts in South Korea, at a side event for the United Nations Commission for Social Development in New York, and in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Canada and elsewhere in the UK. Wong's book Martial Arts Ecology: Aesthetics, Philosophy, and Cinematic Mediation is out from Edinburgh University Press in 2026.

Tickets are free through Eventbrite. Bring trainers if you want to join the workshop part.
