Furoshiki is the Japanese way of wrapping things in a square of cloth instead of paper. Once the present has been opened, the fabric can be used again, as a wrap, a bag or a scarf. Only Make Believe, a teeny fiction-led bookshop at Merton Abbey Mills in south London, is running two pre-Christmas evenings where you can learn how.

The first is on Wednesday 11 November and the second on Wednesday 25 November. Both start at 7pm, and Merton Abbey Mills lists them as running until 8pm. The groups are small, and the shop is giving early notice because there aren't many places.

The £15 ticket includes tuition, a piece of fabric to take home and a drink while you work. You also get the shop to yourselves after hours, which makes it a handy chance to do some Christmas shopping. All the profit from ticket sales goes to Sport in Mind, a mental health charity.

The shop says the tickets are sold in store. It's only open Thursday to Sunday (10am to 5pm on Thursdays and Fridays, 9am to 5pm at the weekend), so for the 11 November session the last chance to call in is Sunday 8 November. You'll find it at 6, The Coles Shop, Merton Abbey Mills, SW19 2RD, between The Watermill Grill and Duda's bar if you're walking from the bandstand.

One knot learnt here should get you through a whole year of birthdays.
