The Fearless Hyena, the 1979 kung fu comedy Jackie Chan co-wrote, directed and starred in, is coming to 4K UHD and Blu-ray from 88 Films in December. The new 4K remaster comes from the original camera negatives, with Dolby Vision and HDR10, and a 1080p Blu-ray is in the set too.

Chan plays a young man whose grandfather, a kung fu master, has trained him in secret and warned him never to show it. He takes a job at a martial arts school anyway, and his fights lead a ruthless old enemy to the family. 88 Films picks out the chopstick "duel" and Chan's turn in drag as highlights.

The discs carry the original Cantonese mono with newly translated English subtitles, an alternate Cantonese track with the music cues used in Japan, where the film was released as Crazy Monkey, and an English dub. Extras include a commentary by Hong Kong cinema experts Frank Djeng and F.J. DeSanto, pieces by David West and Luke White, and Hong Kong and Japanese trailers plus a Japanese TV commercial.

The limited edition comes in a rigid slipcase with new art by Sean Longmore, along with a 40-page book, a foldout poster and five double-sided postcards.

88 Films' own shop also has a website exclusive, limited to 1,000 copies, dated 21 December at £34.99. It adds an O-ring with the original poster art and a bonus Blu-ray of Fearless Hyena Part II, which 88 Films says was finished with doubles and recycled footage after Chan left the production.
