Kinoko no Yama Earphones Are Back, and the Mushrooms Hit Their Target in 48 Minutes

Kagomedia's officially licensed earbuds shaped like Meiji's chocolate mushroom snacks return as a Pro model on Makuake, priced from ¥31,800 for delivery in Japan from March 2027.

Makuake campaign ends 13 Dec (super early price to 15 Nov)

The earbuds that look like a pair of Meiji's Kinoko no Yama chocolate mushrooms are coming back, and Japanese crowdfunding backers did not need long to decide. Kagomedia's Kinoko no Yama Wireless Earphones Pro went live on Makuake on 1 November, and the company says orders passed the 1,000 it needed to put them into production just 48 minutes later.

Kinoko no Yama, which translates as "mushroom mountain", is a long-running Meiji snack of biscuit stalks topped with chocolate caps. The earphones started as a joke product posted on social media, according to Kagomedia, before fans demanded a real version. The 2024 first edition was limited to 3,500 sets, and Kagomedia says they sold out in 10 minutes.

Kagomedia has upgraded the 2024 design. It lists gold-plated touch sensors in place of the earlier copper foil, plus a carried-over AI translation feature that it says covers 144 languages (74 languages and 70 dialects and accents). In Kagomedia's photos, each chocolate-capped bud sits in its own mushroom-shaped slot in the charging case.

On Makuake, the super early price is ¥31,800 including tax, available until 11:59 on 15 November Japan time or until 2,000 sets go, with later tiers at ¥33,000 and ¥34,800 and a regular price of ¥36,300. The campaign runs until 13 December, and Kagomedia expects to start shipping from mid-March 2027. Makuake rewards are delivered only to addresses in Japan.

Eating the real snack while wearing them is probably best avoided.
