SKULLPANDA Opens a Free Pop-Up Dedicated to Doing Nothing in Manhattan

Pop Mart has opened a free SKULLPANDA pop-up at 423 W. 14th St. in Manhattan, and its theme is switching off. The Off Mode Experience runs from 16 October to 30 November, and it's built around slowing down and not having to perform for anyone.

You walk through three immersive rooms, then exit through a dedicated SKULLPANDA shop. Pop Mart says the shop will carry new designs, limited-edition collectibles and NYC-exclusive special editions. The Off Mode series has eleven characters, each standing for a mood such as wanting to stay in, tuning out the noise, taking the mask off or doing nothing at all. Low Battery, Soft Chaos, Mask Off and Rest Day are among the names. The series belongs to THETA SKULLPANDA, the plush-focused side of the SKULLPANDA world.

SKULLPANDA's creator, Xiong Miao, was at the grand opening on 16 October to meet fans and sign items. In her words, the collection is a reminder that "it's okay to pause on the daily musts and expectations." Emily Brough, Head of IP Licensing for POP MART The Americas, says the series feels "tailor-made for New York."
