The series was inspired by a chance encounter Yokoi had while observing a businessman on a train. The businessman was idly playing with an LCD calculator, which sparked Yokoi’s idea of creating a portable gaming device. The first Game & Watch title, “Ball,” was released in 1980. It was a simple game that challenged players to juggle balls using two buttons.
